General Questions
- What is the Manta Systems Automated Frozen Fish Food Feeder?
The Manta Systems feeder is an innovative device that automates the feeding of frozen fish food, ensuring consistent, hassle-free feeding for saltwater aquariums. - Who is this feeder designed for?
This feeder is ideal for saltwater hobbyists, reef tank owners, and aquaculture professionals who want to automate feeding while maintaining the highest-quality nutrition for their fish. - How does it work?
The feeder stores frozen food at 10.4°F (-12°C) and dispenses single cubes of food at scheduled intervals. It prevents thawing between feedings and ensures precise delivery. The User can schedule the device to dispense as many cubes as desired per feeding. - What types of food does the feeder work with?
The device is compatible with any size frozen fish food cubes from any brand, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and custom food blends. - Does the feeder require WiFi to operate?
No, the feeder can function independently using preset feeding schedules. However, WiFi connectivity allows for remote control, monitoring, and real-time notifications via the mobile app.
Capacity & Monitoring
- How much food does the device hold?
The feeder can store up to 72 cubes of commercially available frozen fish food from any brand. - How will I know when the device needs to be refilled?
The User can set a custom low-food threshold in the app. Once the food level reaches this point, the device will send a notification with a countdown, estimating when a refill will be needed based on the programmed feeding schedule.
Troubleshooting & Reliability
- What happens if there is a jam in the device?
If the device attempts to dispense food and a cube fails to drop, a laser sensor detects the issue:
- The device attempts another feeding from the same column.
- If the jam persists, the feeder automatically rotates to the next column and subtracts the failed attempt from the remaining food count.
- The User will receive a notification detailing the jam and the updated number of food cubes remaining in the feeder.
Installation & Setup
- How do I install the feeder on my aquarium?
The unit is designed for easy installation on standard aquarium setups. It includes a mounting bracket and can be positioned over the tank or sump. The device opening is for a max of 2” and be tightened down to fit any sized tank - Does it require a power supply?
Yes, the feeder needs a power source to maintain freezing temperatures and operate the dispensing mechanism and comes with all needed parts. - How do I program feeding times?
Feeding times can be programmed directly through the Manta Systems app, allowing for precise scheduling. You can also push a button on the side of the app for immediate feeding if desired. - Can I adjust portion sizes? Yes! The feeder allows you to customize portion sizes based on the dietary needs of your fish. Minimum feeding is one cube.
Maintenance & Cleaning
- How often does the feeder need maintenance?
The device should be inspected every 2 months to ensure the exterior fan is running smoothly and there isn’t build up on the blades. - How do I clean the feeder?
The inside of the feeding carousel and feeding cup should be washed every time you refill the unit with aquarium-safe cleaning solutions. - Does the feeder prevent food from thawing? Yes, it maintains a consistent freezing temperature inside the device so food maintains peak nutrition, once the cube has been dispensed from the device it then thaws in the feeding cup. As the food thaws it will fall through the holes in the cup allowing your fish to eat the food immediately.
Technical Features
- Does the feeder notify me if there’s an issue? Yes, if connected to WiFi, the feeder will send alerts for low food levels, food jams, power interruptions, or mechanical issues.
- Can I integrate it with my existing aquarium automation system? Yes, it’s designed to work with popular aquarium controllers for seamless integration.
- What happens if the power goes out?
The device is designed to maintain freezing temperatures for up to one hour in the event of a power outage. If power is lost, it will immediately send an alert to notify you. Once power is restored, a second alert will be sent with the current internal temperature.
- If the food remains frozen, you’ll have the option to continue using the existing food in the feeder.
- If the food has thawed, the device will notify you immediately and suspend feedings until it has been cleaned and refilled to prevent the risk of spoiled food entering your aquarium.
- To ensure uninterrupted operation, we highly recommend plugging the unit into a battery backup system whenever possible.
